Winter sports events in Winterberg

National and international competitions in the sports facilities of the city

Let's go into the winter season! The preparations have been in full swing for a few weeks now. With the Veltins Eisarena the starting signal for this year's season was already given very early, because in October the bobsleigh track was already started to be iced up, so that the ice channel is ready for trainings and the athletes can prepare for the national and international competitions. The Ski Lift Carousel Winterberg will host the Snowboard World Cup for the 6th time. Winterberg's landmark, the St. Georg ski jump, awakens from its summer break. Together with the practice hill right next door, the local junior athletes prepare for their competitions. In the biathlon stadium, too, they train diligently to land on the podium.

Especially in the ice channel it's hot. But don't worry, of course it won't thaw out! Several international competitions will take place in the Veltins Eisarena this year. The year starts with the BMW IBSF World Cup Bob & Skeleton presented by VELTINS and the 4-man European Bobsleigh Championships from 3 to 5 January 2020. In skeleton, the riders plunge through the tube lying on their stomachs and head first - and at speeds of well over 100 km/h. Just one month later, the Junior World Championships Bobsleigh & Skeleton will take place on 08 and 09 February. Only two weeks later on February 22nd and 23rd, the Veltins Eisarena will be the venue of the Viessmann Luge World Cup. In contrast to the athletes in skeleton, the lugers race through the ice channel feet first and lying on their backs. Whether bobsleigh, skeleton or luge - watching the athletes glide over the ice at top speeds is fascinating and really gets you excited.

Tip: Did you know that our Panorama Erlebnis Brücke runs directly over the Veltins Eisarena, giving you a bird's eye view of the ice channel!

In the biathlon stadium and on the ski jumps in Winterberg, especially the local young athletes train. The local ski club promotes the talents in various sports such as biathlon, alpine skiing and Nordic combined (cross-country skiing & ski jumping). Regular training sessions and even competitions are also held in summer to keep in shape. An alternative to cross-country skiing is, for example, roller skiing, where athletes use skate-like sports equipment on their feet that resembles a ski and can therefore be used in summer. The training is most intensive in winter, of course, when Winterberg's sports facilities can be fully used again.

Another highlight takes place this season already for the sixth time in the Sauerland: The Snowboard World Cup. In the middle of the ski lift carousel Winterberg the international competition will compete in parallel slalom. The event will take place on 14 and 15 March. Winter sports enthusiasts with a valid lift ticket can be right at the action and don't even have to pay admission. There will be hardly any restrictions on lift operations. Of course, you don't have to be on skis or a snowboard yourself, because pedestrians are also more than welcome!

So you see, Winterberg is the venue of many international competitions and lives up to its name. If you have the chance to participate in one of these events, we advise you to take this chance before it gets warmer again. But don't worry, the city also has a lot to offer in summer. Then, for example, the iXS Dirtmasters Festival starts again where the international mountain bike scene meets in Winterberg. But that's another story...

A winter event, which is not characterized by sports, we still want to put to your heart: The Winterberg Winter Village! It is not a Christmas market in the usual sense, even if the classic mulled wine is not missing, the scent of the finest spices flies through the air and a skating rink waiting to be ridden. The huts and stalls offer regional products and delicacies. In addition, a wide-ranging entertainment programme provides further variety. A visit is worthwhile!
